Our Chairman, Nick Clarke, introduces the company’s approach to corporate social responsibility
“Corporate social responsibility is very important to us as we believe that the copper we produce is for the benefit of all of our stakeholders. From a business perspective, having high CSR standards enhances our reputation in Kazakhstan and our ability to do business there. This approach also helps us to attract and retain talented employees.
“As of the end of 2017, we have now operated over 2 million man hours without a lost time injury (“LTI”). We are proud of this as it demonstrates that we have a safe working culture at Kounrad and this is an important philosophy.
“We undertook numerous health and safety and environmental inspections during 2017 and continue to do so. In addition to these inspections, the site has also been subject to routine state health and safety and environmental inspections and no major issues arose throughout these processes.
“Since our operations commenced at Kounrad, we have made donations to various worthy causes in the local village and nearby town of Balkhash totalling approximately $1.5 million. We believe that our efforts have started to make a difference to people’s lives in the local area and we aim to continue to help where we can.
“We take our CSR ethos and approach to our new Sasa mine in Macedonia, and we look forward to increasing our understanding of the needs of our employees, the environment and the local community in which we operate.”
