Zinc: a key metal in modern society

Ar 4. Zinc

Zinc plays an indispensable role in our daily lives, owing to its physical and chemical properties. In particular, zinc’s resistance to corrosion and ability to be applied as a thin coating to steel results in its use in a vast range of products.

Zinc’s role in society

Corrosion resistance: zinc’s role in galvanising steel, the ubiquitous raw material in construction, transport and many other sectors, prolongs the life of components, saving energy and costs.

Around 60% of global zinc consumption is in the galvanisation of steel1.

Another key use of zinc lies in the renewable energy sector.

The International Zinc Association forecasts annual zinc consumption in solar power generation of 568,000 tonnes by 2030, with a further 41,000 tonnes used in wind energy.
