Strengthening healthcare in Balkhash and Makadonska Kamenica
In 2024, the Kounrad Foundation continued its partnership with the Karaganda Regional Health Authority, sponsoring medical students from the local area during their six-year medical degrees. Given the success of the programme, an additional four students were sponsored in 2024, bringing the total number of students to twelve.
CAML recognised that building the capacity of future healthcare professionals went hand in hand with strengthening the infrastructure on which they rely. Consequently, over several years, the Kounrad Foundation has focused on donating essential medical equipment to the Balkhash hospital. In the first half of 2024, the hospital director wrote to the Kounrad Foundation to provide an update on the success of these contributions. By April 2024, the foetal monitors had supported 1,155 examinations, the neonatal bedside monitors had assisted 54 newborns, and the gynaecology equipment had enabled 506 operations.
Since its installation in 2021, the PCR laboratory had analysed over 80,000 tests, including for COVID-19, hepatitis B and C, toxoplasmosis, chlamydia, listeriosis and pneumonia. At Sasa, a significant milestone was achieved with the delivery of a new x-ray machine purchased for the local medical centre in Makedonska Kamenica.
Through these investments, CAML aims to strengthen local healthcare infrastructure in the areas in which it operates, improving health services for the local communities.
