Prioritising safety: occupational health assessment

Maintaining health and safety
4. Occupational Health 1 Min

Occupational health and safety is one of CAML’s highest-ranked material topics, underscoring the company’s commitment to continuously improving working conditions within its operations.

CAML’s commitment to occupational health was reinforced by the results of a 2022 human rights impact assessment, which recommended engaging an external occupational hygienist to audit the health and safety standards, and practices at both operations.

During 2023, the company collaborated with independent consultants, Park Health, who conducted a desktop review of all company policies and procedures to identify improvement opportunities through a combination of desktop analysis and data sharing. Additionally, Park Health held interviews with key personnel, and facilitated collaborative workshops with both the CAML head office and the operations site teams.

The assessment covered several areas across the operations, including a review of risk profiles, current health risk controls (eg engineering controls and personal protective equipment (‘PPE’)), assurance processes, clinical interventions and employee wellbeing engagement. This was completed with international standards in mind to help ensure that industry best practices formed the foundation of CAML’s internal standard operating procedures and informed its training processes.

The results were communicated to the CAML senior management team and the Sustainability Committee.

Detailed improvement opportunities and actionable recommendations will be addressed during 2024, as efforts continue to improve safety and wellness across the operations.
