Modern training: improving skills with virtual reality

Maintaining health and safety

2022 marked two important milestones for CAML: five years for its operations at Sasa in North Macedonia and ten years of production at Kounrad in Kazakhstan. Since the beginning, CAML has focused on developing these assets using best available technologies and practices wherever possible to enable efficient extraction of important base metals: zinc and lead at Sasa, and copper at Kounrad. This has been underpinned by a commitment to health and safety, making a positive impact on the company’s employees and the socio-economic development of its operating regions, and employing an environmentally responsible approach.

In collaboration with Sasa’s commissioning engineers and trainers, the Group has developed interactive virtual reality models for key areas of the Paste Backfill Plant, laying the foundation for a comprehensive digital training programme. In addition to enhancing skills and improving safety, this initiative also has maintenance benefits by leveraging accurate data and deep insights into machinery on site.

Additionally, at Sasa, dashboards were created to aid training, providing trainees with easy access to demonstrations and various training materials for a range of equipment. One focus involved capturing underground training sessions featuring a Simba longhole drilling machine.

In 2024, QR codes will be implemented for the rollout of Sasa’s Golden Safety Rules.

UN SDG

We provide professional development, vocational training and retraining courses to our employees and contribute to broader education through the provision of community training programmes, scholarships and investment and support for local schools.

We have implemented a number of resource-use efficiency initiatives. In addition to this, we are focused on renewable energy acquisition or generation and fuel improvements. At Kounrad, we are constructing a solar farm to replace 16% of the project’s energy consumption with renewables.
